How Flipping and Compression Work Together

A pure geometric flip doesn't change file size — the same pixels are just re-arranged. To make the file smaller, the image has to be re-encoded, which is exactly what happens when you flip through a browser canvas.

This tool uses that re-encode step to your advantage: flip and compress at the same time. You choose the balance.

Flip Horizontal

Mirrors the image across the vertical center line. Left becomes right, right becomes left. The most common flip — used for selfies, fixing reversed text, and creating mirror-style designs.

Flip Vertical

Mirrors the image across the horizontal center line. Top becomes bottom, bottom becomes top. Used to fix upside-down scans or create reflection effects.

Rotate 180°

Turns the image completely upside down. Mathematically identical to flipping both horizontally and vertically at once.

Compression LevelQualityTypical Savings
HighNear-original~30–50% smaller
Balanced (default)Looks identical on screen~50–70% smaller
MaxSome softness~70–85% smaller

Flipping with compression is not lossless

  • Re-encoding discards a tiny amount of pixel data at every level except PNG
  • At Balanced, the difference is usually invisible on screen
  • PNG output is lossless and barely shrinks — enable Convert to WebP for real savings
  • Always keep your original file — the flipped version is a delivery copy

When to Flip and Compress an Image

  • Selfies and portraits — flip horizontally to match what you see in the mirror
  • Reversed text — fix a photo taken through a mirror
  • Upside-down scans — flip vertically or rotate 180° to correct them
  • Website images — flip and compress in one pass for a smaller asset
  • Email attachments — mirrored and smaller means easier to send
  • Logos and icons — mirror versions at a fraction of the file size
  • Symmetric designs — create mirror versions with smaller output
  • Social media — mirror selfies or fix flipped uploads and save space

Pro Tips

  • Use Balanced for most photos — visually identical to the original at half the size
  • Enable Convert to WebP for the smallest possible web-ready file
  • PNG barely shrinks — for logos, use WebP output instead
  • Flip twice = original — the same flip applied twice returns to the source

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload your image, choose Flip Horizontal, Flip Vertical, or Rotate 180°, select a compression level, then click Apply Flip & Compress. The result downloads instantly — all in your browser.

Yes. Unlike a pure geometric flip, this tool re-encodes the image with your chosen compression level. That means the output file is smaller than the original — but some quality may be lost at lower settings.

Flipping mirrors the image — left becomes right (horizontal flip) or top becomes bottom (vertical flip). Rotating 180° turns the image upside down, which is mathematically the same as flipping both axes.

At High quality: 30–50% smaller. At Balanced: 50–70% smaller. At Max compression: 70–85% smaller. PNG output is lossless and barely shrinks — enable Convert to WebP for real savings on graphics.
